Whitesburg, KY – Today, Stronger than the Storm and Governor Andy Beshear recognized East Kentucky children in grades K-6 who participated in the Hero Helpers Art Contest. The art contest, which was created by Stronger than the Storm to commemorate the one year anniversary of the Eastern Kentucky floods, celebrates how the children of Eastern Kentucky have been hero helpers over the past year.
Held at a luncheon at Cane Kitchen in Whitesburg, Governor Beshear met the participants and thanked them for embodying the spirit of Kentucky.
“The children of Eastern Kentucky have been hero helpers over the last year,” said Brittany Castillo, Founder of Stronger than the Storm. “The art contest was an opportunity for imagination, creativity, and – most importantly – for kids to have another avenue to reflect and express their feelings, thoughts, and experiences following this catastrophic disaster. I hope these young artists had fun while showing us how they’ve helped their friends, family, and community recover in ways big and small over the past year. We’re honored to celebrate these kids as they continue to be hero helpers to those around them.”
